Five Checks Before You Place Your First Eyewear Order
Samples, specifications, packaging, lead times and quality control - five practical checks that protect your first eyewear order from costly surprises.
A first order with a new eyewear factory sets the tone for the whole relationship. Buyers who run these five checks before transferring the deposit rarely have surprises; buyers who skip them fund the lessons. They take a day to run and are worth far more than that.
1. Approve a golden sample - a physical one
Photos and renderings lie by omission. Order a sample of every frame, check the weight, hinges, finish and lens fit in your own hand, then sign and date one sample per model as the golden standard. Both sides should keep one: bulk production is judged against it, not against memory.
2. Put the specification in writing
A one-page specification sheet per model prevents most disputes: material and colour (Pantone numbers), dimensions, lens type and category, logo printing method, accessories and the packaging dieline. If a detail is not on the sheet, it is a suggestion - not an order.
3. Make the packaging survive the journey
Eyewear spends weeks in containers and sorting hubs. Specify inner boxes, sleeve cards and carton strength, and ask for a drop test on the packed carton. A euro of packaging protects a product that retails for a hundred times that.
4. Agree lead time and payment milestones
Confirm production lead time separately from shipping time, and book both against your launch or replenishment dates. Standard practice is a deposit with the order and the balance against the finished-goods photos or inspection report - make the trigger explicit in writing.
5. Define the inspection standard
Agree what 'acceptable' means: the AQL level, what counts as a critical defect, and whether you will inspect yourself, use a third-party inspector, or rely on the factory's outgoing QC with photo evidence. Any of the three works - silence does not.
