How to Verify an Eyewear Supplier: CE, FDA, BSCI and Sedex Explained
What CE, FDA, BSCI and Sedex actually cover for eyewear, and a five-step checklist for verifying a supplier before you place your first order.

If you are sourcing eyewear from overseas, every supplier's website shows the same four letters: CE, FDA, BSCI, Sedex. Copies of certificates are easy to find - and easy to fake. Knowing what each certification actually covers, and which documents to ask for, is the fastest way to separate a real factory from a trading company with a nice catalogue.
CE: the entry ticket to the European Union
CE marking shows that sunglasses and reading glasses meet the EU's personal protective equipment regulation, covering lens quality, impact resistance and UV filtering. Ask the supplier for the Declaration of Conformity and the underlying test report - then check that the report covers your product type, because a certificate for optical frames does not automatically cover polarized sunglasses.
FDA: selling into the United States
The United States regulates eyewear as a medical product. Sunglasses and reading glasses must comply with FDA lens impact-resistance requirements, and the exporting facility should hold an FDA registration. A reliable supplier can quote the registration number and explain how each shipment is tested.
BSCI and Sedex: auditing the factory behind the certificate
CE and FDA prove the product is compliant. BSCI and Sedex (SMETA) audits prove the factory is a responsible workplace - working hours, safety, no child labour. European and American retail chains increasingly require a recent social-compliance audit before they list a new supplier. If you sell to retail chains, ask when the last audit was closed and whether the summary can be shared.
A five-step supplier verification checklist
Request certificates for the exact product category you are buying, not a general licence.
Cross-check test reports with the issuing laboratory - SGS, Intertek, TUV and similar bodies can verify report numbers.
Ask for the FDA registration number and the date of the latest social-compliance audit.
Book a video factory tour, or visit in person, and match what you see to the certificates.
Start with a small trial order and inspect the goods against the approved sample.
