OEM vs ODM: Which Cooperation Model Fits Your Eyewear Brand
OEM and ODM eyewear manufacturing explained - design ownership, MOQ, lead time and cost, and how to pick the right model for your brand's stage.

Every private-label eyewear project starts with the same question: do you manufacture your own design (OEM), or customise a factory design (ODM)? The right answer depends on how established your brand is, how fast you need stock, and how much you want to invest in tooling.
OEM: your design, our production line
Under OEM - original equipment manufacturing - you own the design. You send sketches, a tech pack or a physical sample, and the factory engineers it into a production-ready frame: CAD drawings, tooling, material selection, colour matching and packaging under your brand. OEM gives you exclusive designs, full control of the product story and higher margins once volumes grow. The trade-offs are longer development time and a tooling investment before the first shipment.
ODM: a proven frame, your brand
Under ODM - original design manufacturing - you start from the factory's existing moulds and modify them: your colours, your logo, your packaging. There is no tooling cost, samples take days instead of months, and minimum order quantities are friendlier. ODM is how most new eyewear brands launch: a small collection, tested with real customers, before committing to original tooling.
The two models side by side
Design ownership: OEM is yours exclusively; ODM designs belong to the factory and may be sold in modified form to other buyers.
Speed to market: ODM ships in weeks; OEM takes months from sketch to bulk production.
Investment: ODM needs no tooling; OEM requires mould investment that pays back at volume.
Exclusivity: OEM wins on exclusivity; for ODM bestsellers, negotiate an exclusivity window instead.
Which model fits your stage?
If you are launching a brand or testing a new category, start ODM: pick four to six frames from the catalogue, brand them, and learn what sells. If you already have distribution and a recognisable design language, move your bestsellers to OEM so the designs belong to you. The most successful brands we work with do both - ODM for fast-moving commercial lines, OEM for their signature collections.
